Thanks Mike!

Thanks Alvy! They never made a diesel Lo-Boy, so we at least know it isn't factory. IH never made a diesel that small, it may be a Perkins. Smallest diesel IH made was the BD-154. They used it in the 384 diesel tractor. It was 154 CI, and I suppose it might fit. Originally it had a IH built injection pump on it, but they don't make that pump anymore. AFAIK, the only replacement was made by Bosch, but Stanadyne may have made a replacement. Did you snap a pic? I could probably tell by looking.

I don't think a 154 would hack a 4BT diesel. The low boys were over built, but to go from a 15 HP to a 65 HP???

I don't think it would hack it either. The 4BT made more like 105hp, I've seen them lower but not much. The 4B, now I've seen them de-rated to like 55hp, but it's still up there around 200ftlbs of torque. That would twist the Lo-Boy frame like a pretzel! I agree. If I were to do something like throw a diesel in it, it would be a 4cyl Kubota. Something in the 30hp maybe 35 range and under 100ftlbs. Even then I'd be worried about the drivetrain.

I think the clutch would be the weak link and would give before the frame? No?

But anyway, I like your lo-boys, Jon. Very cool. I came sooo close to buying one about 6 years ago..I've always loved the look--that low, wide stance, and those big turf tires. There was a 154 in good running shape in Callao, VA that I stopped and looked at a couple times (as my impatient wife rolled her eyes at me). I was trying to justify getting it, but it didn't have a Cat 1 hitch on it, only a belly mower (which looked in serviceable shape). Didn't buy it, then a few weeks later, it was gone. It made me a little sad...They come available here in VA quite often, so maybe someday....

If I were to put a diesel in one, the clutch would be upgraded. The frame on these tractors is very light duty. When I was putting the new tires on the front, I needed to move the tractor. I put a piece of solid square steel stock between the axle and the frame and let the jack down. The frame twisted so much the spindle was only about 3 inches from the floor. I have been trying to figure out how the PO broke the clutch flywheel..... I think he may have gotten the frame in a bind. Then, the side/twisting load on the flywheel from the driveshaft broke the flywheel. It's about the only thing I can come up with. We're going to learn a lot about diesel power in the 582 build I'm getting ready to embark on.

They used to put Ford flathead V-8s in Ford N series tractors too. Could be a problem with a transmission and rearend designed for about 23 hp.! Might be OK if you never intend to work it.

I was going to ask which project is going to come first, the diesel 582 or Lo-boy but I think you just answered my question

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
