Finally, made progress! Valve stems ground (clearance), valves installed, heads on, valve covers on, intake installed. exhaust manifolds back on.

One small problem, I drove the flywheel side seal in too deep. By the service manual, .080" is the max depth to drive it in--I screwed up and got in close to .150". Looks like I have to order a seal, can't have any luck crossing it over. Anyone got an interchange # for 52-032-10 Kohler?

I have a seal here and the # on it is 1177 and crosses over to this one.
Go here and see if it is the same size.

That one is too big, this one is around 1 3/4 OD. I'll get a magnifying glass or my son to see if they can make out the numbers on the old one. I can see the numbers, but can't attempt to read them.

Don't laugh, here is my setup for grinding the stem clearance. Held valve in V-block an used a mounted stone in a milling machine. To be honest it worked rather well and fairly precise. Probably needed a different wheel, but this one worked OK.

Check the dimensions and see if they are correct.

Looks like a good set-up to me.
Did you spin the stone as fast as the spindle would go?

Yes, that is it! I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to cross over the Kohler number, the number on the seal, and even looking by sizes--that really puzzled me. The one you listed, however, is not a "rubber covered" seal. Don't know if it makes a difference or not--maybe there is a difference in the sealing material? . There must be something to this as to why you can't find an interchangeable seal #. I can guarantee one thing, the seal I installed too deep was in an aftermarket set--no name and a different # on it than the original. Anyway, I have one coming from a Cadet Collector that needed to thin his parts supply.
I'm afraid to look (so I won't) but the seal you listed is probably on the shelf at 1/2 the parts stores in town.
