This will probably be close to the end of posting on the rebuild of the 128. I picked up the last of the items I needed today and got everything installed and connected. And, I got it started. I can say it is running, but I think I have an issue with the carb. The float seems to be sticking on me, which I don't understand because I completely went thru that thing and replaced everything new, even the needle springs. I can almost get it tune then it sounds like it is loading up, of course due to stuck float I think. I am having next to no luck at getting the idle circuit to tune. Just when I almost get it down to a low idle, it is like you reach over and just turn it off. It is starting very easy and relatively quickly, so I am pretty sure I have the timing right. I was able to do the 30 minute break in at varying RPM's and will retorque the head tomorrow and finish putting on some tin, and drain and refill the oil.
Also on a side note, if anyone has an idea, I was getting quite a bit of popping then smooth running till I attempted to increase fuel then popping again.

And lastly, the beast running. Don't laff at the end, I couldn't get my big fingers to push that tiny button to turn off the camera!

Thanks Allen. I was quite excited, considering that was my first Kohler rebuild and all I had the machine shop do was a bore job and cut the crank pin. Everything else I did, including valve guides and seating the valves.

You did a great job on this project! Looks AWESOME! Hope you can get it dialed in and running good.

As far as tuning the carb, you need to put the muffler on. It won't tune right without some kind of exhaust. It will make more of a difference than you would think.

I wondered about that, and also I did not have the breather on either. I plan on ordering the muffler tomorrow.

Oh, yeah... the air breather. You need it on too. Drawing air through a filter changes the settings. I wouldn't worry too much about the carb till you get the muffler and breather on and try tuning it again. Good luck!

SO..... what's the next project????

I was able to pick up an almost perfect 42" deck for the 128 a year or so ago. By perfect, meaning it is super solid and the baffles look new, but it has been painted a couple of times and looks like crap. I'll probably work on that along with getting back to trying and get my nephews 73 finished up. I just pretty much need to get most everything primed and painted and put together.

A few final pics and updates. I went ahead and took the carb back apart and sure enough the float needle was sticking. Replaced it with another I had, but I have got to get a new float bowl o-ring tomorrow and get the carb back on. Head retorqued, and tins back on. Waiting on new muffler and my front narrow tri ribs. Other than that it is pretty much ready to go. I'll get better pictures once I can get it outside and running. Thanks for all the input.
