Yes they are heavy! For my 123, just yesterday I pulled the seat and fenders. Taking it down to whats good (lots of rust) before attempting the loader build for it...

I've been contemplating building a frame that I can roll a tractor under and lift the engine out with a boat winch. They are just too heavy to do it repeatedly.

I would not use a boat Winch just get a cheap chain fall at Harbor Freight otherwise that's a great idea. And you don't need to build a frame if you have a workshop shed or something like that you could just bolt a two-by-six sticking off the side of it by a couple of feet to hang the chain fall from the end of it, and Presto you got a garden tractor engine hoist...

If you have a hard surface floor, definitely pick up a used engine hoist. Much handier than a single place hoist.

Yes to both, and if you have some extra lumber around...
I have a pile I got from my work they were throwing out a few years ago.
You can make yourself a small Gantry. Many pics and ideas online.
They are very strong and can be made for cheap. Most of these are large ones, but you can get some ideas and scale it down to suit your needs.

3 4 by 4s ... tripod. hang a chain fall from center.. guy in florida built that coral castle that way .. lol

or pallet shelf cross members. people sell them cheap on fakebook or CL
each one holds 300 pounds. fairly lite weight.

tripods easy and break down to nothing for storage.

Tripod is exactly what I was thinking. I have plenty of lumber just laying around. Someone gave me a 1,000lb winch a couple years back, and it would mount perfectly on a 4x4. My shop ceiling is about 20 feet over my head, and when I move later this year it'll be a rental place where they will likely frown on me bolting things to the garage rafters. Regardless of how I do it, it's got to be better than trying to do it by hand!

Anyways, on topic, I put the rear end back on the Mystery Cub this evening! She's on her own wheels, and is starting to look like a tractor again!

I got a good start on a heel/toe control. Just need some pedals.

Continuing on the "field strip" of the 123, I got the fenders, seat pan, off, disconnected the stuff associated with the brake controls according to the service manual, pulled the 6 bolts mentioned to split the tractor and there's apparently more I need to do (swearing?) .

With the engine and the grill out, the front is pretty light. I put a jack stand on top of my work mate, blocked the rear wheels, picked up the front end of the cub and stood the front axle beam on the jack stand, so I could disconnect the brake rods. Probably not OSHA approved but I was aware of the potential for this to go sideways and acted accordingly. Tractor was probably at about 80% to vertical .

Got all 4 wheels back on terra firma without any medical emergencies. Was sunny and 68 today! Great wrench spinning weather.
I stopped while I still had sun and patience.

I'm afraid to see what the back end of the drive line looks like, but I will soon enough. If all is repairable (or replaceable, I dropped a note to Jeff), I'll repair the brakes . It will be a novelty to be able to stop on command.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
