Default Magnum 18 Governor Wheel replacement
Cracked the case on my Magnum 18 today and this is what I found inside. If you look closely at the photos you will see that the governor gear shaft has moved letting the gear fall into the crankcase. You can see what happens when the gear comes into contact with the moving parts of the engine.

The update you're talking about is putting in a roll pin to hold the governor shaft in place, right?

You got lucky that it didn't window the block.

I had a governor do that in a Mag 18 and splattered about like that one. Only thing is it chunked a part of the crankcase out. I JB'd the broken pieces back in the hole. Been running great!

Look up Kohler Magnum Governor service bullitin and it will walk you through it. It even tells you what size roll pin and drill bit to use.

I was very lucky I could see where the metal counter weights got thrown about the interior. There were dents everywhere! It's a miracle non of the metal pieces went for a ride through the cam gear. As fine as the fiber was, the PO must have run it for a long time.

I have the service bulletin. That is still on my list to do. I do have the engine back together, so my list is a short one.
