what are some options for my tired 149. low on compression. im hearing guys talk of repower? what are my options out there?

You have two choices, (A) Rebuild, or (B) Re-power.
Each has their own positives and negatives. It comes down to what you are willing to do for yourself and the size of your wallet.

Rebuild will be easiest, there's really no engines that will drop in without modification.

What leads you to believe it's low on compression? These engines have a compression release to help the start so doing a compression test is worthless. Does it smoke?

Those old Kohler engines are junk!!
I mean heck, they usually only last 30-50 years, and that is with regular maint like changing the oil a couple of times in their lifetime and the air filters @ least once in that time frame. If You spend a few hundred $$ to rebuild one I don't think they will last more than another 30-50 years. I think you get my drift here. A properly rebuilt K series, will outlast a modern repower. given the same maint. or lack of it. but that is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. Rebuild what you have, no muss no fuss. |
