Choke plate jam
Hello
Sorry I just posted this in the welcome forum, posting again in the engine forum. I have a 2166 that when I tighten the nuts on the fuel cup on the studs going through the carburetor on the air cleaner base it somehow causes the choke plate in the carb to jam, so it cant fully close. It stays about 2-4 mm it presses against the carb throat and sticks open just past the gasket and wont start. Its like it twists the carb. If I loosen up a bit on the nuts wham, she closes fine and Starts right up. Its very puzzling, Ive tried pushing air cleaner base left, right up or down and tightening 1 nut at a time but when tight that darn choke wont close all the way. The studs are tight and all seems good. This is a brand new carb and I'm starting tot think this was the original problem I swapped the carb for! I'm hoping some one her has seen this and can offer a suggestion. |

Pictures would help, possibly you are missing a spacer between the carb and Air cleaner.

I'll get some pics at my next attempt. It's tough to see looking down into the fuel "spit back cup" as cub calls it. I did find the studs were loose but tightening made no difference. I'm planning to call the cub dealer tomorrow. Nothing missing, I checked the manual JIC. I left the nuts on the stud bolts not quite snugged up and that lets the choke plate close fully. It's a 16hp Kohler engine single cylinder. I'm beginning to wonder if the 2 studs are the issue. If one was screwed in further than the other I wonder if it might make the air cleaner base twist the carb when tightened up?

First, welcome to OCC...........
As George has indicated, a picture would be most helpful. Here is what the Parts Manual depicts for the Carburetor.

Maybe the studs are on backwards...

Thanks for the responses folks I think I have it working, a little time will tell. It ended up being the choke cable needing to be readjusted after replacing the carburetor. I thought about that but since the choke plate moved fully and freely before tightening the nuts/carb I didn't think it was out of adjustment.
So I tightened up the two nuts, loosened the choke cable clamp and closed the choke fully and bam! it closed. Tightened the cable nut and it started! I still will have to try it when it's super cold but it stated for me with a cold engine. It runs realty cold blooded and takes at least good 5+ mins to warm up. I have to give it a lot of choke for a while, also when I idle down to very low the engine dies, cold or warm so I'm wondering if the new carb needs some low idle adjustment. The cub dealer said they come all adjusted and ready to go. I guess that might be next weekend. Thanks, |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
