XT2 EFI Cold Start Difficulty
I bought a used (about a year old) XT2 with a 679 cc EFI motor and very low hours. It starts fine once warm, but when cold, the motor has to crank excessively long and multiple times before it starts. It's not a big deal as it always starts, but it’s got to be wearing out the starter. It takes 2 to 5 minutes to start cold. In fact, the first start attempt this season took even longer and almost killed the battery. Any ideas what could be wrong? This cannot be normal. I've tried brand new fresh gas but it made no difference. Once warm, it fires right up again instantly.

You didnt mention how many hours are on the unit, But have you tried a simple service? Oil change, tune up, spark plugs, air filter, etc

I'm assuming that this newer lawnmower is electronic controlled fuel delivery
As you mention EFI. That requires something to monitor temperatures of incoming air or coolant temp (if it is a water buffalo) It is a fuel enriching provision, just like a choke on a carburetor equipped engine. The condition you describe sounds to me like it not functioning as designed. A cold engine/cold temps require more fuel initially. I'm thinking it ain't happening. Possibly someone will chime in here that is familiar with what you have. Way too new for my experience. |

It should still be under warranty, call your dealer and have them fix it.

Is it the Kohler engine or the MTD engine?
Kohler has an updated ECU tune for hard starting and over all engine performance. Have to see a dealer with the scan tool. Good luck on warranty as second owner I will alwaysl wonder why a lawn mower needs a computer

Was not aware MTD builds engines
Pretty sure they brand some but never seen one in a cub. XT2 should be a Kohler, Kawasaki might have been an option

I didn't know it either, but a couple years ago I bought a new Cub Cadet Snowblower. I asked what engine was in it and the salesman (a friend and long time IH and Cub Cadet guy) told me that it was made by MTD. I asked him whether it was any good. He said that they had declined to sell them for the first couple years they were out, but that experience has been good with them so they decided to sell them.
I've had the snowblower for 2 years now and haven't had any issues. Have done nothing except put gas and oil in it. I'll give it one thing; it has a lot more guts than the Tecumseh I had on an Ariens blower. Long term? Too soon to tell. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
