1782 custom driveshaft options?
My 1782 with just under 500 hours now has a driveshaft rattle. I changed the balls out in the rear joint, but it did nothing. The darn thing is annoying to the point I hate to crank it. The hub to splined shaft is tight. If I push a stick in there to load the coupling it gets quiet.
So what is everyone else using for cv or universal joints since the factory parts are not available? |

For the last 100 hours that I have been the owner, yes. Frequently. Before that, it's doubtful.

There is not a kit available, but the parts are still available. Jeff in Pa makes the pump adapters.

Mister monkoid I know you said it was “tight” but did you verify that the 10mm bolt in the middle that holds the coupling to the spline shaft is there and tight? Just making sure you covered all the bases. The smallest rattle can be magnified as you know.

Most everyone buys a used Cyclops CV shaft, and machines it to work in the diesels. Jeff in PA makes all the necessary parts. (Parts By Jeff, up top.) Holler at him and he will hook you up.

Yes, the center bolt is tight.

Today I pulled apart the rear driveshaft joint and realized the greater part of the noise is coming from the pump. After inspecting another old one I had on the shelf it appears the only thing that could rattle is the piston block on the splined shaft.
Applying a load via putting a slight pressure on the steering wheel and the rattle goes away. Right after cranking when the oil is thick it doesn't make a noise either. It seems like the power pulses of the diesel engine are slamming the splined shaft and the piston block together. Is this a normal occurrence? Seems like it would hammer the splines off over time. |

Sounds like the pump adapter is wore out. Maybe the input shaft on the pump. Very common on a diesel. I promise, it's not the piston block loose internally on the shaft.
