Default 1641 steering box

One of the few good things about this covid pandemic, is, I get to catch up on some long overdue maintenance. I have about 150 degrees of free play in the steering. So it’s time to tear it apart. I tried to upload a video but it keeps giving me an error. I send pics along the way😁

Sounds like some issue(s) in your Lower Steering Unit.

Got the assembly out and cleaned up. Here are some pics. Not too bad but the worm gear has some chunks missing. Should I file those down or should I replace the shaft? I’m getting a new cam follower as it is worn too. The ball cages seem worn. Should I replace those or just add a couple of extra balls like I’ve seen some guys do? Besides those items, everything else, like the bushings seem fine.

Thanks! Do you have any thoughts in regards to the worm gear or adding more balls?

Looking at that I'd be looking for a new or good used worm gear.

I've not heard of adding more balls?

Gotcha. I’ll start the search for a good used one...While searching for steering rebuilds on this site, I came across one topic where one guy removed the cage and added two more balls to tighten up the steering. Maybe I read it wrong. Ha

That's what I did when I rebuilt the one in my 1641 a few years ago. I thought I posted a thread on it but I can't find it now. I got a new guide pin and ball bearings on Ebay. I also had to replace the sheet metal piece that holds the gasket.

The worm gear looks fine where the cam follower rides. Just make sure there aren't any large burs sticking out and file them off.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
