1872 Hydro won't work after sealing
My Cub Cadet 1872 has been in the shop since a huge leak started in the rear end. It has been removed, drained, and sent away to be resealed. With some help, last night the tractor was put back together. The engine still works perfect, but the power steering doesn't work, the drive doesn't work, and it just acts like the tractor is off. The dipstick says full. I read somewhere that it might need to be charged, but I don't know how to do that. All help is appreciated. Thanks

If the PS doesn't work won't move and lift won't work obviously you have no hydro pressure. Are you sure the drive shaft is spinning(I know dumb ) how about broken pin in shaft. How about pulling the filter and filling with hydro oil before putting it back on? Charge pump put in correctly?
Just trolling things out there. |

First things first, make sure the pump is turning with the driveshaft. Did you put the spirol pin back in? If it is, check to make sure it's not broken.

It should be self charging but I had a hydro a few months ago that wouldn't charge after a fluid/filter change and after several hours of messing with it I put if up on a jack and loosened the filter while it was running and it charged instantly.

Post a pic of the front of the pump, I'm wondering if whoever worked on it put the charge pump back on 180 degrees off.

It you do not mind me asking, who resealed it and how much did it cost? Thanks, Greg.

My dad sent it to get resealed so I don't know who, but it was $400.

I'll get one as soon as I can, I'm kind of suspecting this. Tractor is at our big equipment shop and not at home.

I can describe it for you, with out a pix
there are 2 bolts that hold the charge pump to the hydro, the pump looks like a oval that the shaft/rag attaches too. one end of the oval where the bolts go into has a milled flat the other edge is round. The flat goes on the right side. Now if the pump is turning, and the charge pump is installed correctly, take the fill plug out of the rear cover and wrap a rag around your air hose and insert it and give the rearend and "enema" WHILE it is running. You don't want to blow it's brains out, just a very gentle pressure to get the fluid into the charge pump. Everything is prolly dry and you need to get things primed. It should take less than a minute to perform the priming. Report back to us. |

I'm confused...again.
Here is what it should look like. DSCN0865.jpg DSC03492.jpg The flat spot will be on the right side if you are sitting in the seat.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
