Cub Fever Claims Another Patient: 1811 Rolls Into Shop
With temperatures only hospitable to frostbite, major snow storms threatening weekly, cabin fever sky high, 3+ feet of snow surrounding everything and the National Weather Service declaring winter will be running through August this year, time is ripe for another project. Visited “yeeter” a few weeks back and tried out his 1811…nice machine. With 80's Cubs in demand in New England and pretty beat/tired machines going for easily $650+, I worked out a deal with a nice gentleman from CT for a machine with plow and IH wheel weights…and a bigger challenge. Over the last 3 weeks in the merciless, evening cold of my 2 car garage in a 5x8 work space heated by a Halogen work light, I have begun work on a 1988 1811 with 635 hours.
At this juncture, I’ve only removed 1½ inches of packed mud/grease from under the pedestal the encasing the electronics, wires and the valve control and around the hydro pump and transmission housing. Pedestal emery clothed and repainted. Gauges, relay, solenoid, PTO switch, replaced. The issues: • No braking & brake pedal doesn’t return on it's own • Carburetor surges and engine cuts out at low throttle • Busted gauges, relay, solenoid, PTO & ignition switches, throttle control cable • Leaking gas tank • Acid corroded, rotted out fender support • Broken grille surround • New filters and fluids all around • Fender and cross brace switches shot • Two pedestal to frame bolts broken off • Severely cracked rear tires (anything rubber is hard and cracked) • 10” of steering play • Hood that came out second best to a large falling object Resto progress pics to follow. Looks great cc, and you have made a great start! I saw the pics of your other machine so know you will have this one like new in no time.
Looking forward to watching the progress! (although Im sorry to say it likely wont be by the next snow storm, scheduled for... tonight) |

Curious to follow your progress Ccguy. I'm thinking about buying an 1811 myself, talked to the guy last week. I had a 1211 that I sold, really great tractor but not enough power to spin the 50" deck that was on it. I'm thinking the Mag 18 would be perfect!

I say go for it! I have a 1440 that I couldn't be more happy with...but many guys with much more experience and knowledge than I possess are adamant that the best machines were those from the 80's, the 82/1700/1800 series. I'm anxious to get the 1811 back together and use it. The Mag 18 has that more traditional "big tractor" sound to it -- and it's fast with torque to spare! ccguy Western MA 1994-1440 1988-1811 #4 |

I agree, really like my cyclops tractors but have been looking for something a bit older. Like a lot of people here I have a variety I'm interested in. I really was more looking for a 149 (or 169 if one ever surfaces nearby), but the 1811 seems reasonable and I know I'd use it more given the power, less reason to jump on the 1864 if I've got another tractor with similar power spinning a 50" deck. I'll own a diesel someday as well .....

Today, tackled brake assemblies and finished hood. Brakes didn't work because hardened dirt and sod was packed between pads and calipers. Everything was disassembled, wire brushed and sanded. Plenty of meat on the pads. Clevis pin rusted to clevis and being soaked in PB Blaster.
