Default CC100 - Orig throwout bearing only lasted 60 years

I am awaiting an IH replacement. The bearing had also spun and wore the shaft a little in that spot but go end for end and add 4 holes and all is well.

Except you have weakened it considerably by adding more holes to an already distressed part due to 60 years of age and wear.

Replace w/correct new parts (not cheap by the way) and it will more than likely outlive you!

We will see. This tractor is not a puller. If I replace, I will just get a 5/8" rod. The existing rod is not hardened.

The good news is

You got 60 yrs of service out of the original!

Jeff will make you a new shaft for a very reasonable cost if you need it.

Glad you got it back to work!

Default Type of steel

Jeff appears to be a fine machinist and fabricator. Looks like he uses 4140 steel for his driveshafts. Not sure if annealed or heat treated. And I am sure I will be requesting his services in the future. His prices seem reasonable. Maybe Jeff will jump in this thread.



For those who can machine steel.

1018 cold rolled vs 304 stainless vs 4140. about 18 inches needed

Delivered stock prices (about)

304 stainless .625" round bar 24 inches $36
1018 cold rolled .625 round bar 24 inches $22
4140 cold heat treated .625 round bar 24 inches $36

304 and 4140 are tougher to drill/ can mill drill - 3 --- 1/4" and 1--- 5/16" holes but 304 and 4140 are somewhat tougher/stronger than the 1018 cold rolled.

The 1018 cold rolled is probably near original. I am not sure/aware if there are any problems with 304 in a sintered bronze pilot bearing.

Other aftermarket completed delivered about $55-$60 not sure if 4140 or1018 steel - hot or cold rolled not specified.

My experience with my oe used components is that either the clutch will slip or one of 2 ------1/4" squeeze/sheer pins will go (has not happened yet) before the shaft breaks. The existing shaft is not twisted. Some experience once moving my 18 foot tandem car hauler empty with the cc100. But things still can break.

Default Found a 5/8 piece of steel

I have all kinds of 3/4 in 304 and 1018. I did find a piece of 5/8" in a strut support for a 208 transfer case in a 1985 K10 square body chevy. I believe it is cast steel hardened similar to a cub drive shaft. I could only drill it with carbide bits. Awaiting throwout bearing.
