Newb to pulling...
Hey guys...happy to have found this site! I just picked up a 1968 104 and am planning on making it a puller. I have two young sons and I thought this would be a great father/son endeavor to get into. They are excited...as soon as I got it off the trailer...they lit up. Anyway...I think I would like to pull in the Open Stock class. I need to upgrade the rear tires and front tires...what is the largest size tire I need? Can I fit a 26'' tire on the stock rims in the rear? Also in regards to any other mods you can think of I should look into...let me know! I am looking forward to reading posts on this site that has been helpful in other regards already!! Thanks in advance ;-)

What are the rules for the class you want to run? You will likely need some 12" wide rims and a set of 26x12 tires. The rims will need the 8/4 offset to keep the tires off the fenders. You are going to need a way to put extra weight on the tractor. You will need an adjustable hitch and wheelie bars.
Try running in second gear and if the engine bogs down too early start running in first gear. What I have found from watching everyone else is that with a stock engine, first gear is too low and second is too high. A 20% underdrive and running in second gear works out really well for me. |

don't run over 4000 rpm unless you put a steel flywheel on, make up a shifter lock so it don't pop out of gear. a cheaper route to go than a 20% under is to just find a 16 or 17 tooth second gear and swap it out. your 104 has a 19 tooth second

Thanks guys for your replies! I will find the rules and post them. Are the 12'' rims easy to acquire or do I need to have them made?
Thanks for the gear advice too. I will start searching for that gear. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
