Default transmission lube advice for a 582

I drained the transmission fluid on my 582 (not special) and have the following issue/confusion.

How much oil is supposed to be in the transmission?

The transmission was filled with about 7 liters (almost 2 US gallons) of oil. The manual states it only needs/takes 3.8 liters (about 1 US gallon). Before I drained it I opened the fill and level plug and the oil was about 1 1/2" below the plug so I assumed was a little low. Imagine my surprise and fast swapping of drain pans.

So I called the local dealer and he was of little help. The best he said was maybe add another couple liters/quarts. They also recommended changing to 80W90 as the fluid stated in the manual is no longer available and I was told this is what everyone now uses.

So how much oil? If I run it with 1 gallon will I be damaging something? If I put in 2 gallons (so it reaches the fill/level plug) will I damage something? If I only put in the 1 gallon I will need to make up a dip stick to check the level. Not a big deal just curious.

Thank you for any advice in advance.

Stephen from north of Toronto.

If you have a true 582 (not Special) and it is equipped with a geared transmission (3 forward/1 reverse), you can use any oil from 30 weight motor oil to 90 weight gear oil.
Fill until oil level reaches the plug hole.
Takes about 3 1/2 U.S. quarts.
Two gallons would be for a hydro transmission and require hydro fluid.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
