682 blown engine--options
Had a 682 brought in with what appears to be a blown engine--no compression on one side and oil leaking on the ground. Originally this tractor had a series 2 that blew with 200 hours-- a new short block was installed. The tractor had a new deck installed several years ago but has only had a few hours put on it. Priced a new engine at $4k, definitely not an option. Are new replacement M18 engines available and if so, how creative does one have to be to re-do the wiring? Whats the machine worth now, $350-500?

If you’re looking at re-powering it I don't think you will find an M18 or a K series that would be cost effective. My guess is your best bet would be a Vanguard or a CH Kohler. Even at that you’re looking at $1500 + the cost of extras like a muffler. Other options would be finding a used beat up 2160,2165 or a 2185 Cub with a good engine for a donor, rebuild what you have or part the tractor out. I'm sure others will have some ideas. |

I'd go with what Sam said. We have some deere guys here that repower their 400's with Vanguards. Commands are good too. Check your crank size and check the wiring between the two and don't send 12V to the coils.

Or get a good used engine.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like any new engine will cost more than this thing is worth. After blowing 2 of them the owner is probably not willing to consider another one of these, even if it were rebuilt. If he offers it to me at a decent price I may consider a re-power option. I'll let you know how it turns out.

You say hes blown 2 of these motors. What showing up as the failure? If he blew up 2 of them, not wore them out, the customer has got to be doing something wrong. |

I have a used Kohler CH22 that came out of a 2284. It had some minor issues that have been fixed. PM me if you think it's something that work for you.The pic is it after I test ran it on my bench. |

Finding another engine locally is going to be pretty hard, Cadets became oddballs here about 20 years ago. Looks like this one threw a rod through the block--oil is leaking out but can't see where with all the sheet metal on it. I can see the valves working when I look through the plug hole. It also let out a bunch of smoke when it happened. Engine is shaking bad as well, won't be running it any more. I can't fault the owner, he didn't own it when the first engine blew and has put almost 1200 hours on this one and has never been into the engine. If he offers it to me for a song, I may grab it. Of course I would rather have an 18XX series (to match my 2072).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
