Default Lumber Prices

I noticed that my deck was falling apart, and I mean that litterly. So, off to the local Lowes to buy new decking boards and a couple thousand screws. Went to the sales counter and almost fainted, 686.00. Been along time since I bought any lumber.

I don't buy lumber from lowes, we have lumber store in town that has much higher quality wood and better prices. When I built my shed I saved $300 buying from them instead of Lowe's.

If you have a local lumber yard even if it costs a little more they have much better lumber. This year I'm redoing the front porch with Azek porch flooring and the deck with Trex. Very expensive but the garuntee will run until I'm 90 and I'll never paint them again. My local yard carries both and I can get it cheaper than box stores or on line.

Ronnie, you said you bought screws, but the boys in the pic both have hammers..... maybe you hired the wrong guys? (Grandkids?)

Lowes has the worst selection and worst price of all the home improvement places. I don't agree that local yards have better lumber, or necessarily better prices. Neither is necessarily true. We have two large local lumber yards. One, prices are outrageous. The other has better prices, and the lumber is OK.... but Menards has just as good of quality and better prices.

In my area, Menards is about the best choice for quality and value.

I just built a deck for someone local. I don't have the roof on it yet in the pic.

Some of you apparently have used the composite decking--How well is it holding up? Reason I ask is a restaurant we go to has a large outdoor seating area that was re-done with composite a few years back. I noticed last time I was there it was bowing, sagging and buckling horribly. I'm not in the mood to re-do my deck every few years. I'm a little scared of any composite materials right now--we put laminate flooring in a large part of the house a few years back and several of the joints are dislocating/separating.

Looks like it was built without a permit.

Most lumber yards in my area have closed down due to Home Depot. Stlll some 84 lumber yards around, they always have good prices on Trex. We never go to lowes as lowes blows.

Used to build a lot of these. Now I have the easy life.

And the mills still want the truckers to haul 50,000 lbs of the stuff for nothing.
Worst freight there is to haul, building mat's, it all sucks when it come to hauling it.

Trex had mold and UV problems several years ago that they have corrected. Composite decking is very touchy on joist spacing. If someone tried to save some money with 24" OC spacing it will buckle. If laid at 45 degrees to the joists it requires 12" spacing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
