Bent a new valve?
So, while assembling my newly rebuilt motor, and prior to just resorting to the impact gun, I was having a heck of a time torquing the rear pulley bolt on the crank output to the spec'd 75 ft.lb. I resorted to an old trick I use for removing chainsaw clutches, which is to put the piston at the bottom of stroke, and feed a rope into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole.
Unfortunately, forgetting the relation of the spark plug to the piston and valves, I had rope on top of the valves when I ran the engine thru its first full cycle. There was some binding, but it turned over without an enormous amount of effort. Rope diameter was 1/4". What's the valve clearance on a K301? Any likelihood I bent one of my new valves? Engine fired tonight, and other than needing the governer and the timing adjusted (just started with 0.020" on the points), she ran okay. I believe the K301's did not get compression release until the K301B, and both of my motors are K301A's, although neither one shows squat on the compression tester when cranked by hand. |

If it runs well, I doubt you bent a valve.

Cool. Figured I'd do a leak-down test just to be sure, but she seems to be running strong. I do have a governor issue, but I'll post that in a separate thread.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
