Piston ring types - production vs service
Hi all,
I searched around for an answer to this but came up dry, so forgive me if this has been asked and answered before. I have a piston and ring set for a K241 (part number on the box is 47-874-01) and the part number on the ring set is 235287. The rings look like the attached photo. I haven't seen such a ring set illustrated or really talked about much at all in any of the service manuals I've seen. The closest thing I've found is a brief reference in the old K-series service manual I have (Rev No. 4-72) on page 11.2 (a screenshot is also attached). Perhaps these are "service" rings? I just had the block sleeved and bored to STD so I am wondering if these are fine to use Thanks as always for the help

OEM's often come out with a design for a part, then after years, there comes a new replacement part that is suppose to be an improvement, for various reason.
If you ran the "original part number" and Kohler supersedes it, then I would go with that, and follow the instructions contained in the replacement parts box.

I have been referencing the parts manual (IH-TC-113) made available by MTD. Based on that document (screenshots attached; pages 4 and 6 respectively of Section D) I got the part numbers for the piston and rings (which came as a set under the piston assembly part number). It's surprising how much of this stuff is still available NOS if you look around. I mention the above in case someone else reads this thread and finds this information useful

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
