Default k341 timing

Having a heck of a time getting this motor timed. I attempted to do the static method and couldn't get it quite right, so i bought a timing light hoping it would be easier to adjust while running. These points are infuriating.

Got the light hooked up, and it will sometimes flash, but sometimes not at all. The timing us close enough to where it will start and run, but the more you throttle up the more it surges. When it surges it blows black smoke like it's running rich.

Any ideas why the light isn't working? Some other ignition problem?

I also tried grounding the light on the battery, frame ground, and various areas on the motor. No change.

Tried moving the clamp various areas on the plug wire, and turned it arid every which way no change

Another possible symptom. Sometimes when i turn the key the motor turns over fine. Sometimes the starter engages, but it's like it's trying to turn over a high compression v8. If you hold the key it will turn over very slowly, and the turn over at full speed. I put a new starter on suspecting that was the issue, and while it now turns over faster, the problem remains

I had the same problem on a k321. It had the same probs as yours and I did the very same steps and it turned out to be the point and condenser. Put the new ones in and didn't even have to time it. 20 thou. and it was good. Hope this helps.

just one tooth off will do this problem. Did you put the balance gears back in? I never do.

Not a rebuild, i just pulled the motor to do the mounts. It seemed to have a bit of a miss/ stubble, so i decided to static time it while it was out.

Maybe I'll try new points/ condenser. Had to give up for the night before i pushed it into the creek behind the garage.

since you have the motor out, you should also clean and possibly rebuild the carb while your at it.

Motor is back in, but it's no problem to pull the carb

Is there a guide somewhere, our are instructions in the service manual? Where is the best place to get a rebuild kit?

Mat has a real nice write up on building carbs. Im sure its here some where and someone will post a lik=nk to it. Preaty easy carb to build, bigest thing is make sure your emulsion tube is clean and the float is set right.

go to your car parts store and pick up a gallon of parts cleaner/soaker. works great. then blow it out with a compressor. rebuild kits can be gotten at our sponsors. hold the float under water and check for leaks.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
