Default Diesel - knocking 1782
I own a new to me 1782 with 1500 hours. The little diesel knocks at idle but smooths out with some RPM. Smoke seems normal (black). Starts and runs fine. Power seems fine as well. Is this a normal kubota diesel sound? First diesel tractor.

These old little diesels are not exactly quiet. It very well might be a normal Kubota D600/D640 noise. Mine is loud at idle, but it isn't a knock. I would classify it as a normal diesel sound. It gets quieter as the engine speed increases. We are spoiled with modern diesels as they are more refined and a ton quieter. An oil pressure reading would be more indicative of engine health.

Thanks. To me it sounds like a diesel type sound, but since it's a bit loud I thought I would ask. My tractor has an idiot light for oil pressure and it's not on (except for when in key-on and not running). I suppose you can remove the sensor and install a gauge there? What kind of pressure should I expect?

Well, I got tired of not knowing what's going on with the idiot lights so I installed the 3, 1.5" gauges on the dash, over the column and under the idiot lights, as a few others have done.

It runs around 160 degrees.

Voltage is 14 V and charging well.

Oil pressure is around 35 at idle and 55 at full throttle with the engine up to temp.

Tractor has 1600 hours. I suspect I need a new thermostat and the oil pressure is typical. Please confirm. I am running 15W40 diesel motor oil. Oil is freshly changed.

Knocking can come from poor fuel delivery. Since you confirmed the oil pressure to be good, you could try running some ATF through the fuel system for a couple tanks. As others have indicated, it could be normal.

You said smoke looks normal, but there shouldn't be any
