Smile 341 in a narrow frame

Been collecting info for a bit but this is my 1st post here so go easy on me...

About to start restoring my 123 but am VERY seriously considering notching and widening the frame for larger flywheel for one of the following reasons:

- direct engage start from another K301, have complete engine, starter etc from a CC 1200
- upgrading power to K321 or K341 (dont have either yet)

The frame mods are well within my tooling and exp level so not worried about that but I do have a question about a K341 I've found. Will a K341 from a John Deere 316 fit after making the mods to clear the larder fly wheel and such. If the oil pan is different will either of my CC K301s swap. How do I found out about the PTO swaping over?

Lots of questions and I can tell there is a ton of knowledge here so I'm good hands

Most likely not. The major problem is the diameter of the crankshaft at the PTO end. IIRC they're two different diameters. Thus, the Cub Cadet PTO's won't fit.

There is a way to this. In order to use the PTO from the 301 you will need to use the crankshaft also. The cranks are the same in the 301,321,and 341. the only thing different are the ends were the PTO goes. The oils pans are all the same to. There are shallow and deep ones, but the bolt holes are the same. The John Deere block should have ears on the bottom of the block. This what is called a wide base. The ears can be machined off, and the gap ( if there is one ) can be welded or brazed shut.

14 and 16 hp cranks are the same, but a 12 is not. The counterweights are different sizes.

I have heard that before but, I have never seen anything to confirm it. All the info I have read says they are the same except the PTO end on some. I am not saying it isn't so, but can you show me the info you have.

The reason I ask is because I plan to do this in my 1211. I would think it would be fine to use a 12 crank in a 14-16 even if the counter weights are different. If anything they are probably lighter, because of the 12's piston being smaller and lighter. We used to do a similar thing on the 383's we used to build. You would use a crank from a 400 and drill a big hole through the connecting rod journals. Then to rebalance you can reshape the counter weights making them more aerodynamic. This would lighten the crank and help them rev quicker.

I have a k341 in my 1211, and I know the original M12 crank would not swap into the K341...same with a spare k301 crank I have. The K341 was from a wheel horse, so I swapped a crank from a 1650 into it, along with the oil pan, and flywheel.

Its been a few years since I did the swap, and I cant really remember the issues I ran into...but it wouldn't be a simple swap, or I would have done it.

That is not what you told me a while back in another thread.

http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=3149

((( I put a K341 16 hp from a wheel horse in my 1211......I swapped the oil pan, crank, and the flywheel as the WH crank was too long. The drive cup mount from the M12 wouldn't work with the wheelhorse crank or flywheel either as it wasn't internally threaded. Took a little bit of trial and error, but it went together quite well....)))

So, witch way did you do it ?

I already tossed the piece of paper, but I looked up the part numbers in the parts lookup. Using the QLs as an example, the K321 and K341 had the same crank part number, but not the same as the K301.

Would that be because of a different size PTO shaft size on some of the 12 hp than on the 14-16 hp ?

I just looked at parts tree for the 1250,1450,and 1650. They all had the same part number ( KH-45-142-25 ) for the crank !

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
