Reverse on my 1882
Everything has been going well on the tractor until yesterday. Reverse was always a litte slow for me BUT it worked. Now yesterday it stopped working to the point where I had to get off and push it back. Lucky I was almost done. I did check the hydro level with the dip stick. It looks to be at the right level and looks clean. So should I maybe pull the seat pan / fenders off and pull the valves out to just give them a cleaning with something? see if they are free of and debris? I really need it up and cutting by the weekend.
thoughts folks? |

Pull the valves out and switch them, if reverse works and forward doesn't then you have a bad valve.

Here is a link to what happened to me with my springs. I put some new plates in also. Mine were quite worn.

Thanks for the answers and things to try all. I'm going to tear into it tonight. I have to say I did sit on a new machine last night at lowes.. BOY I was tempted but I KNOW they aren't the same type of machine. I was almost lured by a cumfy seat and beer holder. HA HA.
I'll post what I see tonight. I'm still learning what all the parts on these machines do. I can rebuild my car inside and out. But learning these things is another story. |

I'd take a broken 1882 any day over the best that Lowes has for sale.
As a matter of fact I have done exactly that with an 1882 that had a hole in the engine.

Yeah that's really nice. I'd love to tear into it.. repaint it. I do think that if I get reverse fine again (which I'm sure I can) I'll order a replacement grill for it. The tabs where it mounts to the frame broke and I plastic welded them best I could but the one cracked again and it's just not the same. So I'll order a new one along with a new grill insert. My side panels are scratched from bushes and the one has a small crack in it but it's not bad.
I'd love to restore it some but I can't take it offline that long since I do need to use it at least weekly to cut. |

I think I'll run to the cub dealer at lunch and see if I can pickup more hydro oil and a filter and change it while I'm into it. Now would be the time I think. Can't hurt to have fresh even though it looks really clean.

Here is a good deal for oil and a rear cover gasket.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
