Default LTX1050 blowing 20A fuse

I was mowing for about 2 minutes when my mowers turned off. I pushed the knob off and then on again. Nothing. I got off and checked the belt. Nothing. I shut the tractor off and it would not restart. No clicking, no nothing. As if there was no battery.

On investingation I found that the 20a fuse next to the soleniod was blown. I stuck a paper clip across the terminals ( yah, I know) and started it. After a few seconds the paper clip started to get hot. I shut it off. I checked for shorts and found nothing (yet). I found a 20a fuse (the wrong leg size) and jeri-rigged it to fit. I started the tractor and after 15 seconds it was still not hot or blown.

1. I do not know if this is a intermittently shorted wired or a bad soleniod.
2. For a long time when starting the tractor I would get a clicking or a nothing and after a few attempts it will start. I assumed that the brake switch was out of adjustment or going bad. Now I wonder if this was because of a failing soleniod.

Today I started the mower again. Ran fine for a couple of minutes. Turned the mower on (deck removed, seat removed and clutch locked down) and the fuse did not blow.

3. With the brake switch locked down and the mower deck removed (seat is also removed) should the mower clutch engage when turned on? I see nothing happening at the mower clutch.

Any clues or ideas?

Try another 20A fuse (of the same type) and see if it holds. Could have been a weak fuse from git-go.

Note: Fuses are cheap. Buy a box.

I'll do that. Just for the record the fuse has been in the tractor for years. Maybe it finally wore out.

Well, I just mowed the back yard and so far no problems. So its another one of those problems that I fixed but I can't even take credit for it because I did nothing to fix it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
