S/G Belt Alignment
I noticed on my fairly new to me Cub Cadet 70 with Kohler K241 engine that the s/g belt is misaligned . It is causing the belt to wear out quickly and bounce.
It appears that the drive pulley may need to be pushed on better as I can see a little of the woodruff key slot behind it. I scanned the service manual, but didn't see a procedure for the pulley. I know I will have to remove the PTO, but what will I need to do to install the drive pulley properly if that's my issue. I'll update with pics soon, it's dark and the mosquitos are hungry right now. thanks

Loosen the set screw on the pulley and slide it in or out till it lines up.... There may be two set screws, I can't remember off hand.
Just make for certain if you're moving it in you don't rub it against the S.G. bracket bolt.

Good info. Any chance I can do this w/o removing the PTO?

I found the two set screws and have them soaking in peanut butter blaster (this is what my wife calls PB Blaster).
Can it be as simple as loosening the set screws and tapping it a little to get it better aligned? thank you

Zippy- couldn't that move his PTO friction disk out of alignment with the basket? I'm new to mechanical PTO's so I could be mis-understanding.

It appears the basket pulley needs to go forward towards the grill.
What's the best way of doing this w/o destroying something? I got the set screws loose.

Post a pic. Something doesn't sound right......
I think Zip was referring to moving the pulley on the S/G not the basket pulley. |

Ok, here are some pics.
I really really don't want to have to pull the PTO to make this right. Is it possible the s/g pulley is on backwards?

Yeah, you could probably flip that pulley on the S/G around. Is the S/G mounted on the bottom properly? It does look like the basket pulley could be forward a little more. FWIW, I've not had many machines that the belt was perfectly straight on. You can't move the basket too far forward or you won't have enough crankshaft to attach the PTO to.
Are you sure this is a 70 and not a 100? That engine looks pretty old. Have you ran the SN# to see if it just has 70 decals on it? |

Post a picture of the bracket that holds the starter generator on the engine. I have a feeling you have the wrong bracket or position the wrong way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
