149 dies after bad winter
149 dies after bad winter
I bought this 149 because it had a snowblower on it 3 years ago along with another 149 parts tractor. The owner said it didn't run cause it had sat for 5 years next to his garage. Long story short with some gas and a battery I drove it onto my trailer and have been trying to use it to clear my driveway for three winters. I say trying because the last 2 winters have been a shovel and leaf blower kind of year and I couldn't use the cub to it's limit, and when I did it just wouldn't work right. I put new bushings in the carb to get more speed, and there wouldn't be any snow to try it out. This year has been something else, in fact it snowed this morning. Anyway about a month ago I was warming the cub up to use it as I've done all winter with surprising luck. I was standing next to it and it went pfffft, and stopped running. I turned the key and could feel air coming out from around the head, so I'm guessing head gasket. Well today was the first day in along time we've had weather above freezing so I took the head off to see if it was the gasket or not and it wasns't. The gasket looks fine, Turned the clutch by hand and the piston doesn't move. Looks like I'll be removing the engine for a little more look see.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
