1872 starter issue
tractor was working fine then would not turn over starter when key was turned. Solenoid was clicking so just to eliminate it from posibilites I replaced it and it is still clicking. I replaced the battery. Same problem. Then I noticed that when I tried starting it the hot wire from the battery to the solenoid was getting hot and gave off a little smoke! Hoping to get some suggestions as to what might be going on.

Make sure, that BOTH battery cable connections are "clean, brite, and tight", on both ends of the cables.

A "clicking" solenoid does not necessarily mean that it is healthy enough to power the starter. I would say that it is suspect, or the starter motor is drawing loads of amps due to it being bad, or the engine is turning over hard. Ensure that the engine spins over freely. I had one get enough fuel in the cylinders that it hydro-locked.

Put a jumper cable on the positive battery terminal and the other end temporarily touch it to the large post of the starter.
The engine should turn over, if not, then you know the problem is the starter. if it does turn over then the problem is in the associated electrical circuit. CAUTION: You can get a large spark while touching the jumper to the starter lug and be prepared that the engine could start, so make sure it is in neutral, and you are in a safe situation, as you are circumventing all safety devices.  Best to unload your parts cannon and do more diagnostics
