New to me 2072
I recently picked up a 2072 with a 450 blower. I was happy to pay the $500 asking price for a “real” garden tractor. I say “real” because my last cub, a 1604 didn’t really do anything well. Now I have high hopes for the 2072 with it because a super and having similar capabilities to my JD 425.
I’m hoping someone can tell me what it is I have. I was told it was repowred and not the original engine. The tag on the engine says Kohler CH18. The motor seems to fit in there well, aside from the muffler exiting right against the front grill. Is this a good engine? Common Repower? The forward and reverse movement level is extremely sloppy and unpredictable. If I push it all the way forward it starts to move and then then suddenly goes. I’m sure this isn’t right. I changed the fluid and filter but I haven’t driven it since to see if it changed anything. The way to motor is coupled to the driveshaft isn’t something I like, I’m sure it does it’s job, but I’m also sure there is a better way. I’m guessing there are vendors that sell a “kit” that would space everything properly? Any advice or information is appreciated. |

Original engine would have been a 20hp Magnum Kohler---unless you had the rare very early model with an Onan. If the hydro is till jerking or not responding well, start reading up on trunnion repairs. If those springs are broke/missing, or if there are loose/improperly adjusted linkages, that's where I would start. Fortunately the same "rules" apply to basically all the Cadet hydros except for the little lawn series, such as a 382. Search the forums, lots of info and pictures.

I think the 2072 is a pretty big step up from a 1604. Folks liked those because they were one of the last gear drives CCC/MTD made, but I think for most things folks use garden tractors for, hydro is a better option. The hydro unit in that tractor is more or less bulletproof. Sounds like you need a linkage adjustment/trunion rebuild.
The CH18 is the same as the CH20. you just need to remove the limit screw on the carb to turn it from an 18 into a 20. That might already have been done for you As much as I love the M20, it's hard to get parts for, and the CH is probably a better long term solution than what was in it originally, as long as the swap was done well. The CH engines have a different driveshaft situation than the M18/20 and KT engines before them. Post some pics so we can see what the guy before you did. If it's got a 450 blower, you should check to see if the front pulley is the smaller 4ish inch one or the bigger 6ish inch one. Most CH powered tractors had a 6 inch pulley, and that will spin the 450 too fast. The 450 was designed to be used on a 4" pulley PTO tractor (which yours was with the original engine in it). It's honestly not THAT big of a deal as long as the blower is in good shape, but it'll be overdriven by the tractor if it has the bigger PTO in it (and the PO didn't swap the gearboxes on the blower to make it a 451).

That driveshaft connection is iffy.
Good news is that some later Supers came with the CH and that you are here now where the conversion has been done many times; plenty of knowledge. |

If all you need is the aluminum piece that bolts to the flywheel that the driveshaft bolts to, I have a couple of those laying around, PM me if interested. I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping.

Sam, I don't see it in the picture. Looking straight down the engine I would think it would be visible because I thought those were flush with the flywheel screen... which he doesn't have. I could be wrong... it's happened once before.
Edit: I was wrong, I looked back through some of my older pictures when I had a CH18 and the adapter looks recessed. Whatever the case, those nuts are not going to work long term.
