Diesels In Super Garden Tractors
I have had an ongoing idea of finding a gas super garden tractor somewhere and putting a diesel engine in it. I was looking around on youtube at the different makes of diesels like kubota and yanmar but one kind of caught my eye. I was wondering if anyone has ever seen or would possibly have a picture of a super garden tractor with a 1.6 l VW Turbo Diesel in it.

Sounds like a cool project. Just one thing to consider, the hydro won't be able to use that much power and it will just bypass

I have had at least 8 hydro Cub Cadets. In each case they will stall the engine rather than "bypass" at maximum torque. The bypass valves may only be for the charge circuit, rather than the drive circuit. I know the tractor will stall at low machine speed, but I thought that was due to "pump leakage or cavitation" rather than lifting a bypass valve. Question - Has anybody had a hydrostatic transmission "bypass" rather than stall the engine at high machine ground speed? |

Just spent a little more time looking at the Sundstrand design for the 15U and I was wrong. They do not have a high pressure relief on the 15U series, I’m used to the larger stuff like I used to have on my concrete trucks that do have a high pressure relief, so as Cad said you would twist something with enough power.

Same pump but different output shaft and reduction gear.

I was thinking about putting a diesel in my tractor. I have a 3 cylinder Mits diesel that came out of a Toro lawn tractor. It puts out about 20hp. Thought that would be a good project.

Would the gear ratio for a GAS work with the Diesel ?? Is the diesel top rpm lower than 3600 rpm?

RPM depends on what engine you are talking about.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
