Kohler governor gear
I have a Cub 1860 with a Kohler Magnum 18 engine. I couldn't get the governor to work right, and after doing some research, I realized this was not an uncommon problem. I decided to split the engine, and found the governor gear in a hundred pieces in the crankcase.
I got a new gear, but the problem is it doesn't fit snugly on the shaft. There's just a tiny bit of play in it. I don't want to have to split the engine again in another week or two, so does anybody know if the new gear should fit tightly onto the shaft, or should there be that little bit of play? Thanks for any help. |

Well a "little bit" to one person might be a lot to someone else.
So that just don't cut it as far as a description. it should fit snugly on the shaft, but since shafts are NLA you are going to have to use the one you have. Normally the wear is in the gear bore and not so much on the shaft. Do make sure you pay careful attention to the service manual (downloadable Free) upon reassy of the engine. As some use gaskets in places, and later models don't, but use sealant. And do not use the old adage if a little sealer is good, a lot is better. There are some passages that will get plugged and cause oil starvation. I refuse to use silly-cone sealant I prefer Yamaha #4 or honda or other specific crankcase sealant. Install oil seals dry,(lube inside only) reinstall cam plug how it came out paying attention to original punch marks/witness marks to prevent oil seepage. Make sure you get all the broken pieces out of the oil suction pick up, and blow out all oil passages,-- dissy oil pump rotor and check drive key. check crankcase for possible injury where con rods might of wedged the gear between them and crankcase. I've seen cases with holes blown in them. take your time and leave nothing to chance. |

There was a Service Bulletin from Kohler on pinning the governor Shaft. See post #8 in the following link. https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...rvice+bulletin

That said, while a good idea and costs nothing to do, if it has not come loose after this many years, it prolly won't as it was a proper fit. Me I'm OCD so I would pin it. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
