M18S hunt and surge - Ignition Voltage
I have a newly put together M18S that will run smooth without any scary sounds but it will hunt and surge on occasion and then run smooth and will later hunt again. It sometimes starts with a pop which kind of points to a rich fuel condition.
The carb is an adjustable walbro and is pretty clean inside but could probably use a kit, soak and rebuild. Is there any special tricks or methods to rebuilding this particular carb? For giggles, I turned on the Kv function on my tach and read uneven voltage side to side. The number one side closest to the flywheel and coil read near 10 Kv and the opposite side, number 2 (longest lead) read around 5 Kv. Plugs are new NGK's gapped to .035". Does this point to a bad ignition module and do they vary in output? If it were yours, what direction would you go in with both issues? One other question, is the stock carb the only one that can be put on this engine or will a Kohler 26 or 30 carb fit on it? |

Your name is "mechanic"......
Nothing wrong with that carb. Yes a 26 will work. I'd lean toward water in fuel, or a sticking valve. |

Sticky valve to hunt and surge Or pop on start question?
Do you have an answer to the ignition module question? By the way, user name is Mechanic, not Expert. |

Both. But I'd be draining the fuel, running new lines and looking for water.
Both plugs are fired at the same time. The output of the coil just has two wires on it. It's possible that it has a bad wire, but I imagine your just reading the difference in wire length. At this point, I wouldn't worry about it. Modules do fail, but not often on M18's. It's just funny sing a mechanical question posted by a guy who uses "Mechanic" as a screen name. .... Ok, well maybe not funny so much as ironic. |

Wouldn't wire length affect the wire resistance slightly over this short distance but not really cause the voltage to drop around 5000 volts?

The resistance in the wire would NOT account for a 5K voltage drop. This situation "might" occur if one of the HV leads is partially grounding out. Examine these leads real careful. Look for discoloration or chaffing. If none found, then I would be changing the Module.

thank you for the reply - the wires on the module are in pretty poor shape and I have gone ahead and ordered a new one - I also suspect the float needle valve in the carburetor is not always seating properly and the fuel level in the carb is going higher than spec causing a rich running condition coupled with a rise and fall in engine speed

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
