Default 2166 PTO issue
Hi,

First time poster here. I own a 2166 with about 850 hours, well maintained.

We have had a ton of rain in my area this summer, and I had to delay my last mowing until things got pretty thick. About halfway through the mowing, I noticed that the discharge chute was clogged (but the blades were still spinning and cutting as normal). I shut it all down and cleared out the chute. I also made sure the deck was clear and the blades could spin freely. When I started the machine back up, the PTO would not engage. I just get a little 'pfft' sound when I pull the PTO knob.

Is there some kind of safety switch I may have tripped?

Other facts that may be relevant - Fact 1 - The battery is pretty weak, and I have been using my emergency jumper to start the motor lately. But even when it's really dead, the PTO has still worked just fine. I actually tried jumping while pulling the PTO, but this didn't work. Fact 2 - The previous owner disabled the reverse-gear PTO safety shut-off, so that it will mow in reverse. Again, I have never had an issue with the PTO in two years, so this is not a top candidate.

Replace the battery with a new one, of equal or better CCA's.

I have seen people break their tractors when they keep trying to use it with a dead battery. This will cause the stator to burn up. It is trying to charge a bad battery and keep the pto on at the same time and that lets the smoke out of the stator.

Pulled the battery and got a fresh one today. The last one only made it through two summers, which makes me think there's a root cause that a new battery won't fix long-term.

If it is a lead/acid battery it will not last as they get shaken to bits , you need either a gel or calcium battery to last in a ride-on

I replaced the battery with a brand new upgrade, and it did not fix the problem.

Where should I look next? It still makes a slight 'pffft' sound when I pull the PTO knob.

Sounds like a bad PTO Switch.

Do you have the wiring diagram for your tractor? Do you have a digital volt meter?

If you don't have either of these you will need to get them. I(or Roland) can email you the wiring diagram. Digital meters are cheap.
