Default Kohler 20 HP Horizontal engine

I have a GTX2000 with the 20 HP horizontal shaft engine. It has about 296 hours and uses a quart of oil every time I mow my yard, about 2-3 acres, an 1 1/2-2 hours run time. Does anyone have or had one of these engines and have had this problem? The warranty had just expired when I had to have both cylinder heads repaired. Is the Kohler the piece of junk someone told me it was? HELP?

I do not think that 20 hp Command is junk. Sounds like you have a head gasket issue. An engine expert will be along shorty. What did they repair when it was under warranty?

My Cub had just gone out of warranty when the engine problems started. I needed the mower to be in working order and the dealer I bought it from said they were covered up and it would be 5 weeks before they could get to it. I took it to a local tractor dealer and repair shop and go it fixed.

The valves were messed up. First one head. Then a month or two later, the other head messed up.

I picked up a 2550 a couple years ago that had the same issues. What I found out was that the screen on the flywheel was plugged so it overheated. Thing got so hot that it melted the hood. Pulled the engine cleaned it up, replaced both head gaskets, extended the exhaust and then sent it down the road.

Will replacing the head gaskets stop the engine from using oil? Not an engineman, I'm an electrician.

Leaky head gaskets can cause a Command to use oil if they leaking in the right place.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
