Default Question regarding the big one, the Kohler K 341

Greetings- Currently own an Original, a 102 and a 122 (oh, and a 1320 that I will be selling soon)and have my eyes on a 149 that might need a motor. I have a good running Kohler K341 motor that I grabbed out of an Allis Chalmers 416 last year. My question is about the "charging system" on the 16 HP motor. If it has a built in stator, does it (the stator) have to be removed or just disconnected to work properly in a 149? Is there a code in the engine tag that would let me know what's under the flywheel, or should I just remove it to check for myself? (just to be thorough). Currently the motor has a bendix type starter and a toothed flywheel. Thanks in advance for your insight. regards, Paul, Providence, RI

IF......you are not going to use the stator type of charging system, simply insulate the two terminals to prevent them from touching anything and tuck out of the way. When running under this system, they will produce ~32VAC.

You can also pull the flywheel and remove the stator coil.

I must be missing something, if it has the bendix style starter why would you want to disable the charging system? Why not use it as is?

That's what I was thinking, the block probably doesn't even have a spot to bolt the s/g bracket.

The 149 does not use this type of charging system (Alternator), thus the wiring harness would have to be modified to accommodate this type of system.

In my non professional opinion I'd rather rewire the tractor than deal with a starter generator. A wiring harness for something like a 1210 and it's good to go. Just my 2 cents.

The 416 uses the wide base oil pan and will not fit without mods to the mounts.

It does. They all did. Starter uses the same holes.

What type of base does this block have? It may not fit anyway.

A wiring harness from a QL will substitute.

I can't think of any reason why a AQS motor won't go into a 1X8/9 frame. Basically the same frame as a QL. Only thing I can think of is I believe the engine in the 1X8/9 sat into the frame a little lower. Might have clearance issues with the starter. I'll have to look.

I converted a flywheel/starter type to S/G. There was an emboss on the block to mount the S/G but no emboss to mount the pivot end of the generator adjustment brace.

I too would recommend changing the wiring rather than changing the engine over.

That is "assuming" this guy is going to use a Elec PTO, which would add the Switch and safety devices.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
