Default Gearbox lubricant
I’m wondering what is the correct type of grease to use in the gearbox on a QA36A snowblower. The manual mentions SAE 80 transmission fluid but when I took the cover off it was filled with grease. Any help would be appreciated

I think they're several opinions on this. I rebuilt mine and filed smooth the cover mating surface to give a better flat area for the gasket. I filled it with heavy gear oil like mine was originally. Some people have problems with it leaking and not making a seal so they mix half and half gear oil and bearing grease. Some here even completely fill it with grease.
Make a new gasket and cover it in permetex gasket seal and you shouldn't have an issue if the cover mates well. Also be sure to check the oil seals and make sure both are good and replace them if you can at the same time.

Default gearbox
You do a 80/20 combination of axle grease and 90 wt. or use corn head grease about 3/4 full and will work great.

I agree with Graflex and Digger on the mix.
I also added a grease fitting on the top, just for the halibut.

Sorry for such a late reply. Thanks everyone for your help, don’t want to put the wrong lubricant in ruin it! Too expensive to repair!!
