Help needed
Hi,
This winter I purchased a 1989 Cub Cadet 1050 with a broken driveshaft. This week I replaced the driveshaft, couplers, throwout bearing, hanger and bracket, clutch, clutch drive pins, and pressure plates. I got the driveshaft and couplers from "Jeff" These parts work great! What I didn't bargain for is that second gear is banging and jumping, I think second gear must be missing some teeth on one of the gears. Can any of you lead me in the right direction sourcing the parts needed to repair second gear, and give some insight to the repair itself? Thanks, Pickle |

Unfortunately from what I hear that's a common problem with the trans they put in that model tractor, you would probably be better off installing a cast iron rearend out of an older cub and then you never have to worry about it again.

Thanks for links to the information. Does any member have a set of gears stashed away under a bench they would like to part with?

The guts of the cast iron and aluminum trans are the same. Be careful, there are 3 different 2nd gears. Make sure you get the same tooth count as the one you have. Have you opened it up yet to see what is actually bad? If not, do that first before buying parts. Without looking I think the 1050 used the 19 tooth second gear.
Check with the sponsors above to source parts. Other good places include ihccw.com (has gears in stock), and ebay. |

will a cast trans from a 128 work in a 1050? I was thinking I had read somewhere the driveline angle had changed at some point, but dont remember exacty which trans was being talked about.

I'll try to get it apart on Monday - we've had a cold snap here and I don't want to work in the garage when it's below freezing temperatures outdoors.
I can't get the service manual to load enough pages to learn about the differential/transmission, slow mountain dialup service around here. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
