1641 No Spark
I bought a 1641 a complete tractor minus the motor. I had a 16hp Briggs Vanguard laying around that I installed in it the motor came out of a cub cadet 2160. I got the motor installed and hooked up and tried starting yesterday and no spark I pulled the kill wire and still no spark. I did notice on the kill wire that there is only one yellow wire and I looked at a pervious post on here about a 1440 with no spark and notice that there was two yellow wires. Does this sound like a ground or safety switch issue I am in the process of chasing wires right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue and I ended up needing a new diode wire that connects between the two coils as it was shorting out on the metal housing.

Did this engine run before you swapped it? Disconnect the kill wire and see if it will run. Here is a pic of what's what as far as Vanguard wiring.

Yes I did disconnect the kill wire as shown in your picture Sam and I didn't have spark. I have traced the yellow wire and could not find any defects in the wires. Below is a picture of the wire that I disconnected. The 1641 had the complete wiring harness already in the tractor so all I did was installed the motor. I am thinking about pulling the motor and take the tin off and check the wires in their.

I had a diode go bad in the mag wire one time. I can't remember whether it killed one cylinder or both. On of the two though.
When you get the housing off, disconnect the wire between both coils, spin the engine and see if you have spark. |

Pull the engine and the blower housing. Something is wrong on the inside. You did remove the kill wire as your pic shows so you did it right. Looking at the pic I see what looks like something black oozing out under the tins. not sure what that's all about.
Also near the starter shield I'm seeing some fuzz, could be that the pinion gear on the starter is on the way out. They are made out of plastic and they are a known problem.

for a quick test ,I disconnected all wires that go to the wiring harness. and simply put jumper cable positive on the starter, negative on engine case. I then put the jumpers to a good battery . engine rolls over and I have spark. So diode or wires or Key ????

where you sitting on the tractor before you tried all of the above, even before your first post?
I had one that would only start with the pedal down, and you had to sit on the seat to start it.

Now if you power up the fuel shutoff solenoid, it should run.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
