Default CUB 1211 Hydro NO SPARK!

Hi all.. searched the threads and did not see much on this topic.
I went out to do my weekly mowing last night and to my surprise the 1211 would not start. I could smell plenty of fuel and she was cranking strong. I checked to make sure all the safety switches "most are bypassed already" were not effecting the condition. Finally took out my spark checker and had no spark. I checked for power all the way up the harness as close to the engine as possible and had 12+ volts.

So my question is. Is there a coil under the flywheel cover? I looked online and only saw the large cylindrical type offered but I dont think I have this on my tractor. If there is a coil reading off the flywheel under the cover, Does the engine need to come out of unit to replace? Or is there some trick to this that I am missing?

Thanks for any input.

A 1211 has a Kohler Mag12 in it. The Mag engines use a magneto for spark. Mags need no power to run, as they make their own. The ignition switch simply grounds the mag to shut the motor off. Look for damage to the green wire running out of the ignition switch. Also, could be a faulty ignition switch. Yes, the mag could have failed, but they usually do so when hot. Seldom do they go bad just sitting and fail to work when you go to start the engine. Yes, if it is bad engine removal is the best bet. You can get it off in the tractor, but it's about as much work as just pulling the engine. Besides, it's a good time to clean up the engine while it is out the the tins are off.

Test the electrical first. Mag is the last thing.... and the most expensive.

Hey J-Mech,

Thanks for the speedy reply. Thanks, I was unaware this had a mag. Ok so knowing that now. I assume that if i disconnected the wire that makes it possible for the switch to ground the mag. In theory, should start providing that the wire has not gotten a bare spot and shorted down the line somewhere right? It is also safe to assume that there is only one wire coming off the mag, other than the one going to the spark plug yes?

Thank you so much.

Thanks again.. Just got home. No green wire on ignition switch. I have a yellow, 2 whites together"alt circuit I believe" 2 blue together "headlights" red "crank" and black "12v supply"

I assumed the yellow to be the one going to mag. I disconnected it and had same result. I followed the yellow to a 3 pin connector thats very close to the engine and disconnected there as well. Still no start. Are you positive that all 1211 H models had a mag? I'm not second guessing you.. Its just that I keep seeing a coil shown for this engine that has been discontinued.

As always any help is appreciated.

Thanks

See if you have a white wire that comes out just behind the starter. That is the kill wire. If you disconnect it, crank it over and don't have spark then you have a dead Mag. The Mag is located behind the blower housing so you'll need to remove the engine to get at it.

Yup.. that is where my yellow wire goes. Disconnected "cut wire" and tried it. Still no start. I guess it is a bad mag. Just in disbelief... It ran perfect last week, Parked it when I finished lawn. And like you mentioned.. Mush more likely to quit while its running.

OK. so does anyone know a good source to buy the part from?

Thank you again

Take your pick. Kohler part # is 47-584-01

I'd probably go with this one.

Would like to see some pics of that screamer! Are you repowering it? Nothing like a 2 stroke diesel, sounds like a cool project!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
