Default 1250 hydro problems

Need some help with my 1250. My tractor speed varies a lot going up and down hills. This has been going on since I bought this tractor and I have taken some advice to try to remedy it but have not succeeded. I've tried new filter, changing fluid, trunion repair, and taking out the slop in the linkage. It still does it. If I am driving on the level and start going up a hill at lower speed it will slow down sometimes drastically or stop moving. If I do it at low throttle it will not bog down the engine like with other old cubs I've used. What should I be looking at next? Pump? Pistons? I'd like to fix what I have but I am willing to find another hydrostat unit if I absolutely need to.

The Hydro Drive is just that. It is NOT cruise control. ALL of my Cub Cadet Hydro tractors loose speed going up an incline, and speed up going down. It is the nature of the beast.

If your engine is not loading up when you hit the hill, then either your pump is not maintaining its swash angle. Or the pump side or motor side or both are bypassing. Could be missing or broken springs on the trunnion control plate.

I am aware that hydrostatic drive is not a cruise control but it should not act the way it is. It should not slow down this much, there is something wrong here.

When I did the repair in the trunion, both springs were there and in good condition still.

Could you possibly explain more about what you mentioned about the pump or motor side bypassing?

Could be your pressure relief valves need rebuilt/replaced. Had mine done by MACTECH, transmission worked perfect after that.

Maybe? What are the symptoms of them going bad? Is there a way I can check them? They don't leak and when I depress them and let go they seem to return outward on there own just fine.

(A) your observation is based on the external portion. They can leak internally.

(C) If your Relief valves have the button on top, they are the old, outdated version.

So is there a way to get them tested? I don't mind if they are old and outdated if they are still working correctly. Is there a way to narrow the problem down to the valves without just installing new or rebuilt ones? I don't mind at all if I have to put money into my machine, I just don't want to throw money at it blindly.

I doubt the older Relief Valves are rebuild-able.

Check for broken roll pins in the drive shaft, what kind of filter did you use?
