Default Ch20s

I could use some help with a CH20S. The PO told me one day it started smoking. He used it a couple of more times and it got worse and the engine would barely run. He took the valve cover off it before I got my hands on it. I looked in there but didn't see anything wrong that was obvious. So I'm leaning toward a blown head gasket. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the advise. I'll try to get the head off tomorrow and see what it looks like. I need to also get a battery for it tomorrow. It would be nice to get this thing running soon. My only fear is that the carb is gummed up. PO let it sit for a year or better with gas in it. The rebuild kit isn't cheap either. I've heard I can put a carb on it from a CH25S and increase the power. I'm not sure that's true, but I could probably get a 25 carb for not a whole lot more than the rebuild kit.

Before you pull the head do a compression check or a leak down test. Kohler is proud of their carb kits.
You can put a CH22 carb on a CH18 and up the HP, don’t know about a CH20 but probably.

I'm just going to pull the head. Looks like I might have to pull the entire engine to get the head off. That sucks.

Pull the engine, blower housing, intake manifold, exhaust and then the head. I'd do a little testing first. Does that engine have that crappy SAM ignition on it? That turned out to be the problem with the CH22 in my 2284 made me nuts and cost me $$$$$$$$$.

I rebuilt the carb on my CH18 and it ran worse then before I rebuilt it. Then I found this little part a few days later in my carb cleaner bucket....My wife is correct, I'm an idiot! I put it back in and it runs like a top now.
AJ, I would also do a leak down test like Sam said before pulling all that off. Good luck.

Not worried about it now. Tractor is sold.

The leak down test sounds great except the tester is $130 and this is the only command that I was ever planning on working on in the foreseeable future. Head gaskets are only $25.
