1864 no/weak reverse
I've got a 1990's 1864 I bought last year in an effort to not have to fix my awful modern home depot-style mower every other time I mow my lawn.
It's got fairly low hours and is in nice shape, but I noticed that when I bought it that reverse was kinda slow. Still, it worked, and I don't have to reverse that often. Lately reverse almost doesn't work at all, though. The fluid is fresh and to the fill line in the hydrostat unit. Maybe even a touch high, but not much. It also seems to speed up on it's own going forwards sometimes. I tried adjusting the linkage under the cover in the middle of the mower, but it didn't seem to improve anything and I think it's adjusted properly. I'm maybe imagining things too, but I swear the pump has gotten louder recently. Almost sounds like it's got low fluid, but, well, it doesn't. Any idea what to try next? |

When is the last time you changed the filter?

Change the filter for sure.. and check the trunion springs, spacers and the trunion slot.. very prone to wear.. I also remember seeing a service bulletin years ago on the early Cyclops tractors for slow reverse.. not real sure where to find it now though

Check to see if the Go Go handle is still attached properly to the cross shaft under the dash.BTDT

One thing I would try is switching the pressure releif valves around. If reverse is good and forward not then you got a bad valve, if that is the case contact Mac Tech for valve rebuild. I have had several sets rebuilt by him and work is Excellent! Bill

I have never changed the filter. I have not owned it long and the filter on it doesn't look old, hydraulic fluid looks new and clean as well - but I can definitely try that if you think it'll help.
I am only mowing about 2/3 of an acre so the mower will only get maybe 5-8 hours a year on it now. Thank you for the other responses - I'll try and adjust that stuff this weekend and will reply back what my results. |
