Hydro rear: CI VS Al
So, I finally had a chance to weigh two trans-axles. Guys are always talking about needing the extra weight of a CI and want to switch from Al. Well, I had an Al one laying around, and I just pulled a CI one. Tried to make them as equal as possible. Both are drained, but still have the filter on. Both have external brakes. Both still have the linkage on them. No drawbars. I have to say, the weight difference was more than I expected. There is roughly 40# difference between the two. While that is a significant amount of weight, I don't think I'm going to go switching rears. I'll just add weights and fluid. Wanted to pass the info along.

That is good to know. I would have thought it would have been of a difference. I have a cast rear that is going into my 1772 this winter.

I'll tell you what i did with one alum hydro. Took the fine spline setup out for a puller and put the old coarse cast setup back in. I change ring gears between the two. Those straight cut gears do make a little more noise than the helical ones. Those coarse cast axle & carriers are a dime a dozen. If it breaks and breaks the housing so be it, i"ll put a cast one in it. Mike
