Default 782 oil leak

Working on a 782 w/kt17 kohler that leaks a little oil while running. Seams to be coming from behind the clutch in the front. What kind of project will that be to fix? Anything to be aware of digging into this?

Not bad...just have to remove the PTO clutch and change the crank seal, and clean everything up while you're in there.

Can I safely assume that I can get the seal needed at my local cub dealer?

OK guys...need some help here. Cub Cadet dealer I talked to today said he wasn't aware of two different seals like I read about on this website. Does anybody know the correct seal number that I need for this KT17. How do I tell the difference between series 1 and series 2.

By the Spec Number.

Series I =Spec No 24299 & under
Series II = Spec No 24300 & higher

I guess I'm out of luck because I can't find the spec or serial number decal on this motor. Anybody have any suggestions?

It is on a tag under the intake manifold on the left side of the engine. It's just to the left of the fuel pump.

Well...if you have a series I, it should have an adjustable carb and a metal pipe plug for the oil fill. Series II has a non-adjustable carb and plastic cap for the oil fill. A series II may also have an oil filter blockoff on the right front side of the engine. If you have a flat, box-shaped air cleaner housing, it is most likely a series I. A series II will say "Series II" on the flywheel shroud and air cleaner cover. All bets are off if somebody's been swapping sheetmetal, though...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
