Steering wheel adapter
I have this antique steering wheel I want to use on my current project. I think it's from a Model A Ford. I need to figure out how to go from the Cub's splined shaft to the tapered, keyed hub of the steering wheel. The tapered end of the new shaft will also need to be drilled and tapped for a bolt to hold the wheel on the shaft. Taper is 3/4" to 5/8" with 1/4" key slot.
Haven't found anything remotely close to what I need searching the net. I guess a trip to my local machinist is next, unless someone has an idea. |

Go for it!
But do not alter the steering wheel at all. I can imagine an original unaltered steering wheel like that with original intact and no splits wood is worth some coin. You will have to go to your local friendly machine shop. Or Maybe Jeff-in-PA on here. I was thinking just a tapered and keyed sleeve over the existing spline would suffice. But then the wheel would be too close to the dash. You will have to determine the desired distance how far from the CC shaft to the underside of wheel hub you desire. |

My current thoughts are to find a tapered shaft to fit the wheel (axle shaft, steering shaft, etc), cut the splined end off the cub shaft and couple the two together at some point below the dash. As you mentioned, the height of the wheel above the dash has to be determined.
You're right about the steering wheel's worth; more than I paid for the cub it's going on! |

Looks like a Model T wheel to me. I'd use one of these, available from Speedway Motors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
