Default 42 inch deck (restoration)

Finally been able to start with getting one of the two decks in usable condition, have a 42, 48 inch deck but the 48 inch one needed more work then what I am able to do. Ordered a new main center pulley, idler pulley, deck belt, mule drive belt for a 44 inch deck, the machine had the 48 inch on it. 6 new oil seals for the spindles. I do have some questions tho. The 3 spindles move but not as freely as I have seen on some videos, I pushed out the shaft/cup and noticed the grease inside the center area was hard and contaminated with water. Was I right in getting the new oil seals and removing the old grease and refilling that section?.

The deck has some holes where it rusted through, I have no access to a welder or anyone who does, will JB weld work to fill in the holes. I have the area sanded Down and cleaned.

Going to include pics of the holes, and what I have cleaned so far of the underside with a wire wheel and poly carbide abrasive wheel.

The only proper repair for that rot damage is cutting out the bad metal and welding new metal in. For the amount of money you will have in it, it's really the only option. JB Weld won't work long term with that severe damage.

Looks like you are well on your way to cutting with it. For what it's
worth, getting the old crusty grease out of there was the best way to
go. Always good to go out with the old and in with the new. For all
lubes.
My experience with these spindles that have been sitting a long while.
When on the bench, they don't spin as free as I would
think. Although they are loose for sure. Once you get them hot they
spin as you would think. Run em for a bit and check. Put more grease in
em. Good luck, looks good.

I as much as anyone appreciate a project and a fabrication job... however that one is really going to need some work. I have a 44" deck in words better condition that what is shown you can have if you feel like driving to PA.

I put on 2 coatings of the rust looking primer, (the grey tractor supply had I think was bad) sanding between coatings as the can recommend. I have 2 coatings of the IH white on. Should I keep it at 2 or should I put on 3 coatings, each coating was done very thin.

By the way, that is not a 44" deck, it's either a 38 or 42.

Yes it is a 42 but I can not edit the title. If it ever decides to stop raining here in Maine I’ll sand, primer and paint the 2 top covers and once the 2 pulleys I have on order show up at the dealer I’ll put it back together.

I have been using evapo rust in a plastic tote to soak some parts, the deck side support housing, the left and right belt shield, and the 2 deck runners. Due to a lot of rain and work I just leave the parts in it for days at a time and just rotate them to get covered in the liquid. I have noticed that after soaking for 5 days or so the original paint will basically flake right off with a putty knife and little to no effort to expose the bare none rusted metal under it.

The 2 belt guards, one with some bad holes but I have some ideas on how to make it work with what I have, won’t be the right way but it will work.
