Default 169 issue

Hey guys,
I was driving the new 169 and I noticed the amp meter shows it is discharging, it still starts fine, but when I give it plenty of throttle and push the hydro lever all the way up the tractor sometimes slows down to a stop, then goes faster when it idles, could the charging issue cause this and is it the s/g? Thanks

The engine showing a discharge isn't why you're slowing down, they are 2 separate problems in your case.

Either the battery is showing signs of wear and has a cell that's bad and drawing current from the other cells, or you have a bad regulator or your s/g is having problems.

Each item needs to be checked/tested to eliminate, if that's where your amp showing discharge is coming from. It could also very well be a bad amp gauge if all other tests show good.

I've had new batteries get bad cells, so you need a load test done to see if a cell has gone bad.

The trans sounds like it's low on fluid and as it heats up and oil thins, the pump can't draw the fluid to operate properly. Check the fluid level and check for leaks as to why it's low. Relief valve(s), gasket/shaft seals, hose/metal line nut needs tightening. If the trans or pump is wet/shiney, you have a leak.

Have you changed the fluid and filter yet?

Step one on a tractor with unknown maintence.

So when you say it slows down you mean just forward movement, or is the engine slowing along with it? It's not bogging down right?

The battery is brand new, the engine does not bog down, the tractors speed just slows down, there are no leaks, I have not yet changed the Hytran and filter, I have a new cub cadet filter for it, the Hytran is at the right level and looked ok, but the filter is original from what I can tell, so I will start there, but the amp gauge goes toward D, sometimes in the middle, but never to C I'm pretty sure.

On my 169 the amp meter always shows a discharge. When I first got it running I though it was discharging and messed with a whole bunch of things trying to figure it out, but I found that it just reads to the negative. If I turn the lights on it moves down and reads even more negative, and when it is charging it almost reads at the center. I don't know if you've got a bad one like mine, or if they are adjustable, but for now I just try not to look at it too much because it bothers me. It's kinda like the gas gauge in my truck- it can drive a hundred miles before the needle gets down to 'full', and the last quarter tank seems to disappear after about ten miles.

Why don't you put a voltmeter across the battery leads and see what it is actually reading. If it's discharging do the S/G test in the tech library and see if it's a voltage reg problem or the S/G. Really doesn't get much easier Nick.

Did you try switching the leads on the amp gauge? Maybe someone hooked it up backwards.

Nick, why mess around changing things if they aren't bad. Just do as Kelly said, then you'll know. You can figure out, red goes on possitive, black on negative...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
