Stopped by my clogged bung!

I've had to pull the tank out of the 782D about every other year or so as the fuel elbow at the bottom of the tank gets clogged. This time it seemed to be bits of cork that had broken off from the fuel gauge float and sunk (!!) to the bottom. I guess after 40 yrs, even cork can get saturated.


I was thinking that a short extension to the pickup tube might keep the stuff that sinks to the bottom out of the elbow, so I found a bit of tubing that fit inside the elbow. Seems to run fine, time will tell whether it can withstand being in diesel . Worse comes to worse, I have to pull the tank again (which I'm sadly getting pretty quick at doing).


Nothing ventured, and all. This is the 10th yr I've used Red for the weekly lawn mowing, so I gave it a good bath and wax a couple months ago. I think it still looks pretty good for 2200 hrs of run time . I hope it outlasts me

Get a "cock" with a screen condom on the inlet.
Now I know that sounds X rated but I've seen othere and do have a shut off cock on my 782 with a fine screen inserted instead of the stand tube you inserted.
Also I don't understand why you are having debris in the tank since you have had it out multiple times and I'm sure you have washed/flushed it well.
It would be prudent to use a screened funnel while filling all equipment.
You will be amazed at the chit you see in the screen that comes out of the
"clean" fuel cans we have.
True story:
I had to replace the magneto coil on a Briggs engine on my little 22" walk behind Troy bilt lawnmower 2 days ago.
I removed the little plastic gas tank,and
as I emptied the remaining fuel into a wash pan, to my surprise out flushed
7 dead earwig bugs.
Now i've had that $10 garage sale mower for at least 6 years, so those bugs had to be in there all this time from the previous owner.
I guess it has a a good screen

I'll look for such a thing. It's been two years this time for it to plug up. I also replaced the low pressure fuel filter with a new Wix unit. That's where I noticed the cork grains in it that must have come from the deteriorating gauge float (or possibly the fuel tank cap... I'll go look at that)



Come to think of it, I used to have a spout with such a filter built into the fuel can end.
