PTO belt replacement, now runs constantly?
I replaced the 2 PTO belts on my 3184. It seemed like a pretty straight forward job, but now, as soon as I start the engine, my snowblower is turning. The PTO seems to be engaging and disengaging fine, as I can see the PTO pulley release and stop spinning. Should the engine pulleys be spinning inside of the belts until the PTO activates and tightens up the belts? These are aftermarket belts, but when I quickly compared them to the belts I took off, they seemed to be the same length. Or do I maybe have an issue with the PTO brake lever? The spring is keeping that brake shoe down in the pulley, but thats about all I can tell. I guess I'm hoping that maybe the belts are just snug, and once I put some load on the snowblower, they will wear in a bit?

I thought I had a better pic but is this how yours looks? This one is missing 1 belt but you can see the slack in the belt and the brake touching the output pulley. Make sure you have the two shoulder bolts on the bottom bracket, I think that holds the belts up when not engaged.

Yes, pretty much the same setup. Seems like maybe my belts are just too tight. My brake rod spring seems to be mounted slightly different though. Maybe that rod needs adjustment. Does that brake keep the lower drive pulley locked when the pto is disengaged?

It stops it from turning but you can spin it by hand. What belts did you use?
I have used these on my mil's 3165 before and they worked well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CUB-CADET-MT...item19d1f00a2f I used the OEM ones on my 3205 and they are great but a little pricey. http://www.cubcadet.com/equipment/cubcadet/954-3084

These are the ones I used...they seemed to have good reviews and are the right size as far as I can tell.

Some 3000 series have an adjustable arm that is attached to the vacuum actuator. My 3165 has one, my 3100, 3206 and 3240 do not.
If yours has the adjustable arm, it may just need to be adjusted. I assume CC put it there to accommodate belt wear. If it was adjusted for worn belts, it is probably too tight w/new belts |

I'll check it out, but it seems that the pulley is backing off enough to release all tension and stops spinning. It's kind of like the engine pulley just has too much friction and won't spin inside of the belt. I'm wondering if I could get a heavier load on the pto, if it would start to slip like it is supossed to and sort of "wear in".

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
