Without cutting the frame it will not fit. Love those 72's please find another frame. The tranny is the same .

but is that like what i would have to do for all the narrow frames or is it different because the other narrows just need to be cut a little for the flywheel

A 16 horse will not fit in a NF without cutting the frame. The only NF that came with anything bigger than a 12 horse was the 147, had a 14. The frame came notched from the factory. Do you really need the 16? A 12 will bolt right in.

If you are going to cobble a narrow frame tractor to get a larger HP engine in it, leave the more rare narrow frame tractors alone. Find yourself something isn't "more valuable" in it's original state, perhaps a 102 or 104 something along those lines.
Besides that (If I'm not mistaken) the 7 hp tractor frames have a short (not as tall) tunnel, and probably won't stand up to the stress of a 14 or 16 hp engine as well as the other models.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
