Carb cleaning tips?
I've read Matt's .pdf file I created about rebuilding a carb, but I'd like to know if anyone else has any tips, tricks... My 127 started pouring gas from the bowl, so I guess it's time to rebuild it. It's a #26 factory carb. I also have a "spare" #26.
Some questions... - I've noticed that the needle seat, under the float, one (on the tractor) looks like it's a 3/8 hex shaped seat and the other is round seat and has like a slot for a screwdriver. Is one of these not the correct one? - How long is too long in carb cleaner? Both the carbs I have are painted, I know Matt said 30 minutes on his write up, is that amount of time good enough or would it hurt to go longer? - How can I tell if I need to replace the throttle and choke linkage? What's the definition of "loose". On both of them the choke openings are firm and solid, not any play. On both of them the throttle opening moves easily and one has a little up/down play. - How can I tell if I need to replace the float, it doesn't appear that there are any holes or gas in the float(s). Or is it just a given to replace it. I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but this should get me started.

The Kohler carb kits come with the hex on the seat, and most aftermarket ones have a screwdriver slot. They both work.
The 30 minutes assumes a warm (75 degrees at least, or so) and sunny day. If it's cold, it'll need to be a lot longer. If you do some precleaning it shouldn't have to be in there too long. I wouldn't want to leave it in for days. Axial play in the throttle shaft is ok...if you have more than slight radial play, it needs to have a bushing installed. If the float isn't covered in corrosion and doesn't have gas in it, it is probably fine.

Thanks Matt.... the garage is about 60 in it, so I guess I'll leave it in for a while. I de-greased it first to get off any major stuff.

carb cleaner
I have done the carb clearner bucket, but I now find that a ultrasonic cleaner is MUCH more effective. Ask around and see if anyone has one, 20 min in there and its like new !!!
